Kevin Bryson is a trombonist, composer, and educator based in the Bay Area.  He is known as a performer of rock, salsa, and jazz on the trombone.  In addition to leading his own in demand jazz ensembles he performs with many Big Bands, and one of the best rock & soul bands in the Bay Area, The Houserockers.

First drawn to jazz music by the famous big bands of the 30s and 40s, Kevin has performed extensively in this genre throughout his career.  In high school he was recipient of the Louis Armstrong Award for outstanding musical achievement.  He was a member of the SFJazz All Star Big Band, an ensemble that traveled to New York City, to compete as a finalist in the Essentially Ellington Festival two years in a row.

Kevin graduated magna cum laude from Berklee College of Music in Boston in 2008, where he was a recipient of the Lawrence and Alma Berk scholarship.  Upon returning to the Bay Area health issues forced him to cease performing work.  During this time he studied electronic and symphonic composition, incorporating elements into his own jazz writing style.  Since returning as a performer he has worked to promote the trombone’s role as a solo instrument and unique voice in small group jazz.  Over time his influences have grown encompassed everything from John Coltrane to Brian Eno.

As a teacher Kevin has over 15 years of experience, with students of all ages and abilities on trombone, piano, french horn, Trumpet, and baritone. His collaborative style of instruction combines mentorship & encouragement with teaching techniques that are personalized to help each student achieve their goals.  His students have auditioned into the top ensembles in their schools and in the area including California All-State Jazz Ensemble, NCBA honor band, and The San Jose Jazz High School All Stars.

Kevin’s former teachers include Phil Wilson, lead trombonist with Woody Herman’s Big Band, Hal Crook, trombonist in the Phil Woods Quintet, and Doug Elliott, soloist with the Airmen of Note.  He has also received masterclass instruction from New York Philharmonic trombonist Joe Alessi, JLCO trombonist Wycliff Gordon, and Conrad Herwig.

Kevin Bryson currently resides in the South Bay and maintains a busy teaching studio with year-round lessons.  He can be seen performing with Salsón, the House Rockers, Seventh Street big band, and many small jazz ensembles throughout the Bay Area.
