Kenny Wheeler's Lost Scores
To mark ten years since Kenny Wheeler’s passing and the upcoming recording project with the Royal Academy and Frost School of Music – we are proud to present this rare and largely unheard music of Kenny Wheeler, from his most formative period at the very beginning of the formation of his own big band. Using the Wheeler archive at the Royal Academy of Music, his original scores from his first BBC broadcasts in the 1970s have been reconstructed and are presented here for one of the only times ever, since their original performances in the BBC’s Maida Vale studios more than forty years ago. This is an exclusive performance of this special project and features an exceptionally rare chance to hear this extraordinary music, as well as some of the finest young musicians emerging on the scene from both here in the UK and from Miami in the US – alongside a legend of British Jazz that was part of the original Kenny Wheeler big band sessions; Norma Winstone. Also featured are the RAM/UM heads of jazz, trumpeters Nick Smart and John Daversa, and rising star James Copus.
Henry Mancini Institute with Anat Cohen
Experience the magic of Brazilian music as Anat Cohen, the charismatic and prolific Grammy-nominated clarinetist and saxophonist, joins forces with The Henry Mancini Institute Orchestra, conducted by the renowned NEA Jazz Master, Maria Schneider.
The New York Times writes, “Ms. Cohen on the clarinet was a revelation. Using the clarinet’s upper register, she could evoke infectious joy. In the lower register, her playing could conjure a deep, soulful melancholy. On up-tempo numbers, her improvisations weren’t just bebop fast; they had a clarity and deep intelligence that is really quite rare. She made it look effortless, even as she was playing the most technically difficult of all the reed instruments... she took my breath away.” Joining her on stage are pianist and Frost School of Music Dean Shelly Berg and clarinetist Mark Nuccio.

A Celebration of Brubeck
2020 marked the centennial year of jazz giant Dave Brubeck. To celebrate his life and legacy, Dave's sons Chris and Dan Brubeck, who performed and recorded with their father beginning in the 1970s, curated a multimedia show with their own Brubeck Brothers Quartet. With Dan and Chris as the foundation, guitarist Mike DeMicco and pianist Chuck Lamb complete this dynamic quartet. Through stories told by his sons and music performed by the quartet, the show invites audiences to travel along the timeline of Dave’s extraordinary life and career.
Chris and Dan Brubeck have been making music together practically all their lives. Drummer Dan and bassist, trombonist and composer Chris cut their first record together in 1966. They’ve subsequently played a variety of styles in a number of groups, performing at concert series, colleges and jazz festivals across North America and Europe, including the Newport, Detroit, Montreal, Playboy/Hollywood Bowl and Monterey jazz festivals.
To celebrate the life and legacy of Dave Brubeck, his sons Dan and Chris Brubeck will be joined by special guest Catherine Russell and the Frost Concert Band for an evening of Brubeck’s music and stories about his distinguished career.
